Discover Tiritiri Matangi Island: A Birdwatcher’s Paradise Just a Ferry Ride from Auckland

You might recognise the name Tiritiri Matangi from the charming video that Air New Zealand features on its flights—if you haven’t seen it yet, take a moment to watch it here. This captivating glimpse into one of New Zealand's most enchanting wildlife sanctuaries might just inspire you to explore it in person!

New Zealand’s rich avian diversity is a birdwatcher’s paradise, and Tiritiri Matangi Island offers one of the best ways to experience it. Located just a 75-minute ferry ride from Auckland’s CBD, this open bird sanctuary in the Hauraki Gulf is a haven for native wildlife and a must-visit for nature enthusiasts.

A Sanctuary Like No Other

Tiritiri Matangi Island is renowned for being a predator-free zone and one of the world's most successful conservation projects. Managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) and the Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi Inc., the island is home to a remarkable array of unique and endangered bird species. Look out for the Kakapo, Tui, Korora (little blue penguin), fantail, and the elusive little spotted Kiwi. Reptile lovers can also spot the ancient tuatara in its natural habitat.

Explore at Your Own Pace or with a Guide

The island offers several walking tracks suited to various fitness levels, allowing you to explore the lush landscapes and observe wildlife at your own pace. For a deeper understanding of the island’s history and conservation efforts, consider joining a guided walk. These tours, lasting around 90 minutes, are perfect for first-time visitors and provide valuable insights into the island's unique ecosystem.

Enjoy a Swim at Hobbs Beach

During the warmer months, Hobbs Beach is a fantastic spot for a refreshing swim. Just a 10-minute stroll from the wharf, this sandy haven is ideal for cooling off after a day of exploring.

Stay Overnight for a Special Experience

For the ultimate Tiritiri Matangi experience, consider staying overnight in the island’s bunkhouse. Many of the island’s birds are more active at night, increasing your chances of spotting a kiwi. To book your stay, visit the DOC website. Don’t miss a visit to the Tiritiri Matangi lighthouse, the oldest operating lighthouse in New Zealand, offering panoramic views and a glimpse into the island’s maritime history.
